Abstract

The ancient Palestinian port of Joppa's associations with a specific classical myth (that of Andromeda), as well as with certain personalities of the Old and New Testaments (Jonah; Peter and Tabitha), provide evidence for assessing the comprehension and exploitation of myth and religious traditions on the vernacular level. The same evidence enables discussion of one set of circumstances whereby the classical mythological tradition was replaced, to meet the requirements of Christian pilgrims, by Judaeo-Christian interests.
