The bright museum lights surrounded by grey flecks, turned black. A whiff of dusty heat, a sudden whirlwind. The guide's voice flickered and went out. I came to. There was a woman lying not uncomfortably on the green and white tiles of the floor. They chattered importantly in Italian. Someone had placed a pillow under her head, someone was checking her pulse. Then, a cool drink, a ride home in a taxi. The sensorium is a stage screen, a bright painted village rolled up tight when not in use. Let your attention wander, fingers loosen, the scroll snaps shut. Janet McCann

Janet McCann is professor of English at Texas A&M University, where she has taught since 1969. She received a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship in 1989. Her most recent book is a creative writing text, In A Field of Words, coauthored with Sybil Estess (Prentice Hall, 2003). Her poems have appeared in America, Christian Century, Poetry Australia, Nimrod, and elsewhere. Her new chapbook, Emily's Dress, was published by Pecan Grove Press (2004).
