The Editors are pleased to announce the winner of the 2003 Margaret Church Memorial Prize for the best essay to appear in MFS. The Church Prize was established in 1984 in memory of Dr. Church, Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Purdue University and a longtime editor of this journal.

The winner for 2003 is Yung-Hsing Wu whose essay "Doing Things with Ethics: Beloved, Sula, and the Reading of Judgment" appeared in Volume 49, Number 4 (780-805). Special thanks to Richard Pearce (Wheaton College, emeritus) for choosing this year's winner from among the finalists selected by the MFS staff.

In making his selection, Prof. Pearce writes, "Yung- Hsing Wu's elegant and compelling 'Doing Things with Ethics' both illuminates the tangled problems of Morrison's Sula and Beloved and develops a persuasive argument for reading as an ethical performance."

Prof. Wu, who teaches at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, received $250 and a copy of the award that appears here.
