In this issue the Journal proudly presents a dozen papers chosen from among those delivered at the third international EDIS conference. The conference took place in August 1999 at Mt. Holyoke College and was hosted by Martha Ackmann. In addition to the panels and papers listed elsewhere in this issue, the conference featured festivities at the Homestead and the Evergreens in Amherst, a poetry reading by Jorie Graham at Harvard, and a tour of the Houghton Library's most recent exhibit of Dickinson papers.

A particular pleasure in selecting papers from such a conference is that it allows the Journal to publish work by scholars who would otherwise be barred from its pages. Members of the editorial board and staff members would normally not be allowed to submit manuscripts. However, this rule is suspended for issues drawn from conference presentations, thus making it possible to present here the work of Jane Eberwein, Suzanne Juhasz, Vivian Pollak, Brad Ricca, and Shira Wolosky as well as that of our other contributors.
