    • Public opinion -- United States.
    • College students -- United States -- Political activity.
    Abstract:
This study investigated student activists' characterizations of administrators at a southern university in the United States. Findings from interviews with 26 activists indicate that they perceive administrators as gatekeepers, antagonists, supporters, and absentee leaders. Activists had limited understandings of the roles and responsibilities of administrators as leaders in higher education. They expressed a desire to develop stronger relationships with administrators, both to enhance their ability to participate in the campus community and to be an integral part of shaping the university and, through the university, society.

  • Advance to Graduate Education: The Effect of College Quality and Undergraduate Majors

    • Graduate students -- United States.
    • College graduates -- United States -- Social conditions.
    • College graduates -- United States -- Economic conditions.
    Abstract:
Using a nationally representative sample of baccalaureate graduates from 1993, this study examines the effect of college quality and undergraduate majors on a variety of graduate education outcomes including graduate school enrollment, graduate degree attainment, and the quality of graduate programs. Other factors being equal, college quality has a significant effect on graduate education. More importantly, because part of socioeconomic factors has been crystallized into academic performance and educational credentials, socioeconomic factors exert significant direct and indirect effects on graduate education.

  • Financial Changes and Optimal Spending Rates among Top Liberal Arts Colleges, 1996-2001
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Universities and colleges -- United States -- Finance.
    Abstract:
This article documents the changes in financial status among the top 49 liberal arts colleges between 1996 and 2001 by using Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) financial and enrollment data. These data show large disparities in net assets per student, expenses per student, and the subsidies per full-paying student and the average student. Differences in comprehensive fees are considerably smaller. In addition the six wealthiest institutions have maintained relatively greater spending while still increasing their net assets faster than their peer institutions. Two views of the optimal rates of spending are then presented, and spending rates are calculated for each institution. Most of these institutions have spending rates well below the rate that would be required to achieve intergenerational equity.

  • An Examination of Costs at Four-Year Public Colleges and Universities between 1989 and 1998
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Universities and colleges -- United States -- Finance.
    Abstract:
Using data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, this paper examines the inflation-adjusted cost per student between 1989 and 1998 for a sample of four-year public colleges and universities. On average, per-student expenditures grew faster than inflation over the period; but expenditures on public service, academic support, student services, institutional support, and unrestricted scholarships grew faster than instruction for most institutions. The paper also found that the growth rate in adjusted total expenditures per student was caused by (in order of importance) an increase in average faculty salaries, an increase in non-instructional expenditures, and an increase in instructional expenditures other than the salaries of full-time faculty.

  • Post-Tenure Review: What Matters to Faculty
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • College teachers -- Rating of -- United States.
    • College teachers -- United States -- Attitudes.
    • College teachers -- Tenure -- United States.
    Abstract:
Post-tenure review has been studied primarily as an administrative issue in higher education; less attention has been given to empirically examining the underlying assumptions of faculty regarding this phenomenon. By surveying a representative sample of over 400 instructional faculty at two research universities, this study contributes to what is known about faculty beliefs and values regarding post-tenure review in the context of organizational culture. Implications for further exploration of the culture of the academy are included.
