CHARGE association is a diagnostic label for a group of congenital malformations, including hearing impairment and mental retardation, which frequently occur together. In the past several years, schools for hearing-impaired children, particularly those with programs for multihandicapped hearing-impaired students, have enrolled students with this diagnosis. A review of the literature concerning the CHARGE association yielded information concerning etiology and characteristics. From this review, generalizations are drawn for teachers of the hearing impaired working with students with the diagnosis of CHARGE association.
