Researchers have found that widespread unemployment contributes to the success of xenophobic political campaigns. After crunching the numbers, Christopher Cochrane and Neil Nevitte from the University of Toronto concluded, “a high unemployment rate predisposes citizens to accept the anti-immigrant rhetoric of far-right parties, and a low unemployment rate predisposes citizens to reject this rhetoric.” [End Page 24]
