Abstract:
This article analyzes the adaptations of Brecht’s The Good Person of Szechwan in Chinese regional chuanju and yueju. In Good Woman/Bad Woman from 2001 and The Good Person of Jiangnan from 2013, Brecht’s materialist critique was used to explore China’s social and economic situation. The productions show regional xiqu in the face of modernization and localization.
