- I Am
I am the word the puddle for the thirst of the whole world and I have in my soul clear water and sky in the background.
I already was an oar, I was the hoe and the brick; the railroad track, fieldwork, seed, grain.
I already was the oppressive word, today I am the word enough. And this day I am going to reject the boss trampling such a thought.
My song is the salty blade that turns against the foreman, saying that my flesh descends from no master.
I am quicumbi and mazambican in the beat of the drum. I am the rhythm of batuque in the house of jeje-nago.
I am the bombacha of the saint I am the churrasco of Ogum. Amongst the children of this land naturally I am one.
I am the labor and the combat sweat and blood from which [End Page 813] the entrails of the earth nourish roots as well.

- Sou
Sou a palavra cacimba pra sede de todo mundo e tenho assim minha alma: água limpa e céu no fundo.
Já fui remo, fui enxada e pedra de construção; trilho de estrada-de-ferro, lavoura, semente, grão.
Já fui a palavra canga sou hoje a palavra basta. E vou refugando a manga num atropelo de aspa.
Meu canto é faca de charque voltada contra o feitor, dizendo que minha carne não é de nenhum senhor.
Sou o samba das escolas em todos os carnavais. Sou o samba da cidade e lá dos confins rurais. Sou quicumbi e maçambique no compasso do tambor. Sou um toque de batuque em casa jeje-nagô.
Sou a bombacha de santo sou o churrasco de Ogum. [End Page 981] Entre os filhos desta terra naturalmente sou um. Sou o trabalho e a luta, suor e sangue de quem nas entranhas desta terra nutre raízes também.
