John Duncan is an assistant professor of history at Boise State University. Gari Ledyard is a professor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Culture, Columbia University. Martina Deuchler is a senior lecturer in history at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. She is an authority on late nineteenth-century Korean history and author of Confucian Gentlemen and Barbarian Envoys, University of Washington Press, 1977.
