It is commonly known that Iamblichus changed the course of Platonism. Plotinus and
Porphyry believed that philosophy (6eaoſa) alone could save the soul, whereas Iamblichus
countered that it was ritual acts properly per-formed (6eovoya) that did so. I propose to
examine this change from 6eopía to 6eovoyía. In particular, I will show that much of what
Iamblichus taught about theurgy is a reaction to specific points of Plotinus' doctrine on the
