Because most of my life has been lived outside the United States, my reflections are not mainly about American patterns. Two chapters (5 and 6), however, deal exclusively with the United States labor market. Two others (8 and 9) deal exclusively with the European colonies; the remaining chapters benefit, I hope, from having wider perspectives. The subjects dealt with are highly controversial.
