I am deeply indebted to the supervisor of this dissertation, Prof. Daniel den Hengst, and to its co-supervisor, Prof. Jan den Boeft, for their unselfish commitment of time to make expert and conscientious comments on my work, which matured thanks to the freedom granted to me. I felt both challenged and reassured because of this demonstration of their trust in me.
