Abstract
In Chapter 7, I turn to Muslim’s Ṣaḥīḥ. Attention is paid to the collection’s title, Muslim’s purpose of composing the Ṣaḥīḥ, and the timeframe of its compilation. I take up the issue, raised by al-Dāraquṭnī, of whether Muslim’s collection is a mustakhraj of al-Bukhārī’s Ṣaḥīḥ. To answer this question, I compare Muslim’s Kitāb al-Qadar with al-Bukhārī’s corresponding Kitāb, of the one hand, and the overall contents of al-Bukhārī’s Ṣaḥīḥ, on the other hand. The chapter surveys the structure of Muslim’s Ṣaḥīḥ, including the number of books and traditions in the collection and the issue of chapter headings (tarājim; sg. tarjama) in Muslim’s original text. At the chapter’s end, I map the trajectory of the Ṣaḥīḥ from a work of local significance to a canonical collection embodying the Prophet’s true verbal relics.
