Islam is a universal religion which transcends ethnic and national boundaries. Recognition
of this fact does not, however, preclude the perception of religion as an essential element of
Malay ethnic identity. In the context of Malay ethnicity in Malaysia, it is more accurate to
attach the hyphenated ethnic label" Malay-Muslim" to the com munity popularly known as"
