HE INTERNATIONAL Institute of Social Research was established in Frankfurt am Main in 1923 as an affiliate of the University. In the spring of 1933 the Institute was closed by the German government. In 1934 the Institute transferred its main activities to New York City, where it is affiliated with Columbia University. The members of the Institute form a group of German émigré scholars working and teaching in the fields of philosophy, psychology, economics, sociology, and law. Their work is held together by a common purpose: to make the social sciences useful for an analysis of the main tendencies of present-day society.
The previous publications of the Institute are all in German and deal with such problems as Authority and Family, Transition from Feudal to Modern Thought, Economic and Social Structure of China, and Economic Planning. The Institute also has published since 1932 the Zeitschrift für Sozialforschung, with contributions in German, English, and French (F. Alean, Paris, France; three issues a year). In this periodical the members of the Institute and other scholars deal with problems arising from their research and review the major publications in the social sciences.
