This is not a matter of little consequence: spatial separateness allows social relationships to
be structured along racial lines, which in turn has the effect of perpetuating and reinforcing
social and economic inequality. The thesis of this Article is straightforward: If we hope to
achieve our goal of a more perfect union where true racial equality exists, it is critical that we
examine and understand the link between policing, race, and place.
