Abstract
We analyzed data from the 1986 American's Changing Lives Study to examine the effects of bereavement on two dimensions of health: self-ratings of health and depression among African and White Americans in the 24-39 age group, 40-49 age group, 50-59 age group, and the 60 and over age group. The results revealed that bereavement was a significant factor affecting the health of White Americans, particularly in the youngest and oldest age groups. However, no bereavement effects were observed among African Americans within any of the age groups. These findings raise questions as to the differential effects of bereavement on health for African Americans and Whites. Implications for future clinical practice and research are discussed.
