Lightfoot's new edition of Dionysius Periegetes is the first of such range in many decades or
even centuries: the last substantial commentary on the whole text of the Periegesis, the only
entirely preserved didactic geographical poem of Hadrian's reign, was produced in the 12th
century by the Byzantine scholar and bishop Eustathius of Thessalonike (see also latter
