This paper examines the plausibility for an African transfer of technology to the South
Carolina ante-bellum rice economy. Emphasis is on the colonial period when three distinct
rice production systems emerged. A cross-cultural and geographical analysis is employed to
examine the spatial patterns of rice growing between South Carolina and West Africa. The
analysis demonstrates a remarkable correspondence between micro-environments planted
to rice as well as the field and irrigation techniques utilized for production.

Emphasis is on the colonial period when three distinct rice production systems emerged. A cross-cultural and geographical analysis is employed to examine the spatial patterns of rice growing between South Carolina and West Africa. The analysis demonstrates a remarkable correspondence between micro-environments planted to rice as well as the field and irrigation techniques utilized for production.
