CLYDE DE L. RYALS was born in Atlanta on 19 December 1928. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees at Emory University and a doctorate in English from the University of Pennsylvania, 1957, where he became professor, 1969-73. He joined the faculty at Duke University, 1973, and the editors of the Carlyle Letters with volumes 10 to 12, in 1984. His active part in editing the Carlyles' letters ends as joint senior editor of volume 27, but will be acknowledged and greatly valued in volumes to come. He died on 10 July 1998, and his loss is deeply regretted personally by all who knew and worked with him, and who gratefully esteem his extensive contribution to the study of the Victorians, which was marked by the keenest judgment and critical insight, particularly on Browning, Tennyson, and Carlyle.

25 April 1998 saw the passing of CHARLES R. SANDERS who began the monumental undertaking of collecting the letters of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle for this edition in 1952; he edited it from 1960, saw the publication of the first four volumes in 1970, and continued to volume 9. A brief tribute to him can be found in the Acknowledgments of volume 10: vii-viii. His death reminds us of our lasting respect and of his contribution to the Collected Letters.
