The starting point of the controversy that I intend to analyse is the essay of Heinrich
Vogt:“Die Entdeckungsgeschichte des Irrationalen nach Plato und anderen Quellen des 4.
Jahrhunderts”(Vogt 1909-10). Vogt discussed Plato's Theaetetus, 147D-l48B, whose
contents were, he proposed, an important testimony concerning the history of the discovery

Hieronymus Georg Zeuthen, in his essay:“Sur la constitution des Livres arithmetiques d’Euclide et leur rapport 21 la question de l’irrationnalite”(Zeuthen 1910), stated that Vogt’s memoir was “extremely interesting”, and that the author went further than others in the conclusions drawn from the Theaetetus: this led him, Zeuthen, to a new examination of the arithmetical books of Eu-
