Using nationally representative survey data, from a mature population that includes
measures of income, consumption, and a broad set of indicators of well-being, we study
whether income or consumption better identifies individuals' material well-being. We find
that, for the mature population, income appears superior to consumption. We provide some
speculative evidence about why this relationship is different than that found for other
populations in the recent literature.
Abstract
Using nationally representative survey data, from a mature population that includes measures of income, consumption, and a broad set of indicators of well-being, we study whether income or consumption better identifies individuals' material well-being. We find that, for the mature population, income appears superior to consumption. We provide some speculative evidence about why this relationship is different than that found for other populations in the recent literature.
