Conducted content analyses of 63 hrs of prime-time TV broadcasting to evaluate the
medium's messages with respect to cross-racial (CR) relationships. Findings reveal that
Black appearances constituted less than 9% of the human appearance time in product
commercials and programing, with CR interactions constituting less than 2% of human

This study was designed to assess the changes that have occurred in the portrayals of black
people and cross‐racial relationships in prime‐time television broadcasting during the past
decade. By replicating the content analysis procedures used by Weigel, Loomis, and Soja
(1980), this investigation provided a consistent basis for comparing two similar samples of
