A recent research project in the United Kingdom has examined the objectives of
conventional fieldwork periods in libraries, and has monitored a specimen period to assess
the likely achievement of these objectives. The research suggests that certain aspects of
learning can be successfully achieved through fieldwork, but others would more effectively
be handled by alternative methods.
