Van Dyck's paternal grandfather, also called Anthony (1529–1580), had moved to Den
Berendans in December 1579. He made a living as a silk merchant, although he also
practised as an artist and had been trained by Jan Ghendrick, alias van Cleve, in 1546,
becoming a master of the guild in 1556. Anthony the elder's older brother Peter (d. 1581)
also trained as an artist, and is recorded in the workshop of Geert Ghendrick in 1552. There
appears to have been no artist in the Cuypers family, and the profession of Maria Cuypers's …
