A study was conducted to determine: (a) if a significant relationship exists among alcohol abuse in college students and selected psychological/demographic variables; (b) which variables singularly are the best predictors of alcohol abuse; and (c) which combination of variables is the best predictor of alcohol abuse. The statistical analyses were Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Stepwise Multiple Regression. Three hundred undergraduates volunteered. Th were significant relationships between alcohol abuse and nine of the variables (gender, assertivenesst self-esteem, age, trait anxiety, grade point average, state anxiety, depression, and familial abuse of alcohol). The best single predictors of alcohol abuse were familial abuse of alcohol, depression, state anxiety, self-esteem, and grade point average. The best combination of predictors for alcohol abuse was familial abuse of alcohol, self-esteem, depression, state anxiety, grade point average and assertiveness.
