A definition of “the South” based on the frequency of entries beginning with “Southern” and
“Dixie” in the telephone directories of a sample of American cities yields substantial the
same results as earlier definitions based on quite different criteria. There are some
differences, however, in the areas delimited by these two words, and the differences may
make sense in the light of the words' different connotations. The method employed should
be useful in many other applications.
