Abstract
This book, which is based both on the literature and the author's own studies, contains basic information on mites associated with Lepidoptera, whether as parasites of scavengers or as more occasional associates. In three introductory chapters, early records of such associations are reviewed, equipment and methods for studying mites are described and acarine morphology, life-cycles and systematic classification are discussed. Some 90 species of mites are then dealt with, being grouped under broad systematic headings and according to the type of their association with Lepidoptera. The morphology, occurrence, distribution, ecology and behaviour of the mites are discussed. In the first appendix, two keys are provided to facilitate the identification of the mites most likely to be found on Lepidoptera; one is to living examples and the other is for use with mounted specimens. The second appendix consists of a list of Lepidoptera and the mites recorded from each, and the third is a list of the mites and the Lepidoptera with which they are known to be associated. The book has a geographical and a general index.
