Even though Jo Fabian and Sasha Waltz each base one of their dance theatre pieces on
East German identity during and after the opening of the Berlin Wall in 1989, their distinct
approaches and trainings produce dramatically different choreographies. By examining the
dialectical relationships of their productions with East German citizens' conscious pedestrian
movements at that time, I illuminate the role of choreography in the creation of societal
structures.
