This study examines the determinants of both strike incidence and duration using
longitudinal data on 2,767 collective bargaining settlements reached between 1957 and
1984. Two major findings are that: strike incidence is procyclical and is positively related to
uncompensated unexpected inflation over the previous contract. Strike duration is found to
be countercyclical.
