Books I, II, III and V were translated and annotated by me. Book IV was translated and annotated by EL Burge. Books VI, VII, VIII and IX were first translated and annotated by William Harris Stahl, but had not been fully revised at the time of his death. They were revised and prepared for publication by the late Carl Boyer of Brooklyn College and by myself, with assistance from Anna Griffiths, WTH Jackson, and (for Book IX) Edward A. Lippman of Columbia University. This translation has worked from the text of Martianus edited by Adolf Dick (Teubner, Leipzig, 1925; rep. 1969). James Willis is preparing a new edition for Teubner, and conjectures many emendations, some of which he has published. The translators—I in particular—have had the benefit of his advice and suggestions, and his opinions are often to be found in the notes. However, these are not to be regarded as other than interim opinions, relatively few in number, pending the publication of Willis's edition. This translation should be regarded as a translation of the Dick edition with some suggestions about variant readings, and with no responsibility borne by Dr. Willis or his publisher.
It has been a moving tribute to William Harris Stahl that so many and diverse people have so readily cooperated to ensure the publication of his last scholarly work. I should like to add my personal deep appreciation of the extraordinary assistance given by Columbia University Press and Michelle Marder Kamhi over the years of preparation of this book.
