Sarah Winchester Reads Great Expectations

From: The Missouri Review
Volume 36, Number 4, 2013
p. 55 | 10.1353/mis.2013.0107

In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

Of course you miss him, but it’s worse to waste
a lifetime eating from a cobwebbed plate—
A moth caught in a white lace snare: the future
growing brittle as old icing. Fleur-de-lis and sugar
roses swirling like a waltz without the orchestra.
If love doesn’t jilt you, death will leave you china-
cracked and kneeling in the orchard’s empty aisles,
the plums decked out like bridesmaids for the sky
or grievers ripening back to joy. You’ll be alone
too young. You’ll need the veil like a gravestone:
a way to bury who you were: the naïve girl who
thought her house was built. Better to draw new
rooms he’s never lived in, staircases to any place
he maybe is. Count nails; forget the crumbled cake.
