Abstract

Introduction to, and annotated translation of, Victricius of Rouen Praising the Saints (de laude sanctorum). This short sermon, the only known work of Victricius, was probably delivered in 396 to welcome a gift of relics from Ambrose of Milan, and was then sent to him, probably with some expansion, in thanks. The sermon makes a unique contribution to the theology of relics. This paper is offered as a partner to David Hunter's paper, which uses Victricius to explore debates about relics, asceticism, and clergy celibacy in fourth-century Gaul.
