Abstract

In an interview with Dinah Dodds on March 8, 1991, GDR writer Helga Schütz speaks about the fall of the Berlin Wall and the unification of the two German states, the role of literature in a socialist society, and the position of women in the former GDR. Schütz was born in 1937 in Schlesien and grew up in Dresden. After her Abitur she studied drama theory at the Hochschule für Filmkunst in Potsdam-Babelsberg. She has written screenplays for documentary and feature films for the Potsdam-Babelsberg film studio Defa as well as numerous other literary works. Her short story "Festbeleuchtung" and the novels In Annas Namen and Julia oder Erziehung zum Chorgesang have appeared in the West. In 1984 she was a guest along with Irmtraud Morgner at the Women in German Conference in Boston. (DD)
