Between 1947 and 1991 Northrop Frye’s writings generally appeared in three forms: as individual books (Anatomy of Criticism, Words with Power), as lecture series or collections of essays presented as a unified whole (The Critical Path, The Modern Century), and as collections of miscellaneous essays and lectures assembled to focus on related issues (The Bush Garden, Spiritus Mundi). Then in 1996, the thirty volumes of Frye’s Collected Works began to appear. To make it easier for readers to consult his writings in whichever version is at hand, the references in this centennial issue include, wherever possible, both forms of publication. Typical examples are:

To single volumes specifically referred to in the essays: (AC, 22; CW 22: 23) that is, page 22 of the original Anatomy; page 23 of the Anatomy as edited in volume 22 of the Collected Works.

Where the Collected Works is the best source for individual essays, references appear in a form such as: (‘Speculation and Concern,’ CW 7: 253).

The Notebooks and much other unpublished material appear only in the Collected Works; thus, CW 5: 25, for example, signifies Late Notebooks, volume 5 of the Collected Works, page 25.
