The following two Archives essays, by Lisa Weihman and Emily Janda Monteiro, are meant to be read alongside each other. They originate in both authors’ participation in a seminar on Women and Periodical Culture at the 2006 Modernist Studies Association conference, which was held in Tulsa. One of the surprises of the seminar was the discovery of two participants working separately on the same obscure early twentieth-century Irish periodical, the Bean na h-Éireann. As an auditor of the seminar I was intrigued by the pairing of these two research narratives and invited both scholars to describe their research here. I would like to thank Barbara Green and Mary Chapman, the seminar’s organizers, for giving me permission to sit in on such a vibrant and productive discussion.
