Obituary

Anne M. Chapman (1922–2010)

The scholarly community mourns the loss of Anne M. Chapman, a Franco-American ethnologist who specialized in the study of hunting and gathering peoples of Central and South America. Chapman, who earned doctoral degrees from Columbia University and the Sorbonne, also received honorary degrees from institutions in Honduras and Chile. She carried out field research among the Tolupan (Jicaque), Lenca, Selk’nam (Onas), and Yamana. She published widely in Spanish, French, and English, and also made award-winning films. Her last book, published this year by Cambridge University Press, is entitled, European Encounters with the Yamana People of Cape Horn, Before and After Darwin.

Awards, Fellowships & Prizes

In March, the Middle Atlantic Council of Latin American Studies (MACLAS) awarded its inaugural Judy McInnis Award to historian Barbara A. Tenenbaum of the Library of Congress, Hispanic Division and a member of the editorial board of The Americas. The McInnis Award recognizes a lifetime of outstanding service to the profession by a member of MACLAS. The award was established to honor the memory of Judy McInnis, the late professor of Spanish at the University of Delaware, who devoted significant time and energy to the success of MACLAS.
