- When Dahlia Wants to Be Alone
She walks back the path to the targets, to where our dad buried the turtle. What she likes is to spell her own name there out of stuff she finds around, pebbles and dandelions and dead bees from the windowsill. Like it’s her grave. Like she’s buried there. Then she curls up on the grass for a while and pretends to be an only child and an orphan. She likes the sound of the creek running by. The sound of nobody talking. [End Page 464]
