Abstract
This paper analyzes the talmudic text Baba Mezia 62a, which focuses upon a well-known ethical dilemma situated in the desert. The dilemma, dissected by Ahad Ha'am in his 1910 essay "Judaism and the Gospels," becomes a focal point not only for careful textual analysis, but also for an examination of Jewish and Christian notions of altruism.
