News and Information NEWS AND INFORMATION Conferences and Calls for Papers Ninth Annual Klutznick Symposium 215 Creighton University's Klutznick Chair in Jewish Civilization and Center for the Study of Religion and Society will host the Ninth Annual Klutznick Symposium to take place in Omaha, Nebraska on Sunday and Monday, October 27 and 28, 1996. The theme of the symposium will be "Yiddish language and Culture: Then and Now." The program committee seeks proposals for presentations on topics related to the history and development of Yiddish as a language, and aspects of Yiddish culture, including music, fiction, poetry, humor, and theater. Tolerance and Intolerance An international conference to mark the centenary of James Parkes' birth is being organized by the Centre for the Study of the Relations Between the Jewish and non-Jewish Peoples at the University of Southampton. The conference will be held September 10-12, 1996. The Reverend Dr. James Parkes (1896-1981) was a pioneer in many different fields involving the study ofJewish/non-Jewish relationships. He was among the first in the western world to acknowledge the responsibility ofChristianity in the development ofantisemitism and worked to eradicate antisimitism whether connected with religion or not. This international conference is designed to examine the broader themes ofJames Parkes' life work in relation to tolerance and intolerance. The main focus will be on Jewish/non-Jewish relations, but comparative and generalized approaches will be welcome. Many of the themes raised byJames Parkes' work, such as the nature of tolerance and intolerance, the definition of insiders and outsiders, and the intersection of religious, cultural, and racial forms of intolerance, are pressing issues throughout the contemporary world. The conference will employ an interdisciplinary framework which will cover many different periods. There will be a restricted number of places, and papers will be selected on the basis of written abstracts.
