Abstract
In order to cope with the Cold War situation in both Poland and Cuba, Pope John Paul II contrasted the secular sphere of communism with the permanent Christian tradition and its transcendent mysteries. By interpreting history and current events in sacred terms, the pope tried to preserve national identities, empower groups, and ground political change in an overarching Christian order.
