Abstract

This article makes two related assertions about Beckett's Waiting for Godot and Endgame. First, it uncovers the original source of the word "knook," which is the term Pozzo uses to describe Lucky, his carrier, in Godot. And second, referencing explanations in a letter written by Beckett to this author in 1960, it discusses sequences from the French versions of both Godot and Endgame that Beckett did not include in his English translations. Taken together, in the context of these and other Beckett literary works (Molloy, All That Fall, Embers), these assertions coalesce to open a new window on Beckett's mental landscape.
