Modem Drama Studies: An Annual Bibliography PHILIPPA SHEPPARD WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF CHARLES COSTELLO AND MAURIZIO DODARO The primary objective of the annual bibliography is to record current scholarship , criticism, and commentary that may prove valuable to students of dramatic literature and, to a lesser extent, of theatre history. The bibliography includes all playwrights who lived past 1899 (plus Becque and BUchner) and influential theatre figures other than performers. Reviews, reprinted books (unless the edition has been corrected or updated), unpublished theses, graduate student periodicals, and publications of letters or diaries are generally excluded. The bibliography does not include publications of original texts of plays or translations. The annual bibliography also serves as a supplement to Charles Carpenter's Modern Drama Scholarship and Criticism, 1966-1980: An International Bibliography (University of Toronto Press, 1986). The checklist is divided as follows: A: General and Miscellaneous (including reference works) B: American C: British and Irish D: Canadian E: Hispanic (including Portuguese) F: French (including Belgian) G: Italian H: Germanic (including Austrian, Swiss, and Dutch) J: Scandinavian K: Eastern European (Russian, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Balkan, Baltic) L: Post-Colonial and Asian "General and Miscellaneous" includes those works that do not fit into any other category, except on occasion a general geographical one. Geographic categories are arranged so that general and miscellaneous titles come first, folModern Drama, 42 (1999) 59 60 An Annual Bibliography lowed by special subjects that properly belong to that same geographic area. An article about several Canadian playwrights will therefore be found first in the general Canadian section, and then under each of the playwrights discussed , following the general Canadian section. Publishers, places of publication , and names used as subjects are given in full except where convention dictates otherwise. Subtitles of journals are not given in the entries, but are included in the "List of Journals Consulted, [999," as are the full references for abbreviated journal names. Full citations are provided for every occurrence of an entry. An auempt has been made to include the contents of anthologies or other kinds of multiple item texts, either as individual entries or in content descriptions. In the case of foreign language journals and monographs , we follow the practice usual for the given language. Titles of journals and monographs are not capitalized. The style follows the Chimgo Manual of Style generally, although a specific modification is that the "no." abbreviation is used where no volume number exists for ajournal. Entries for journals cover what has been received by the University ofToronto library system by March 1999, and thus include items not previously cited that become available to .us during that period. Subscribers are welcome and encouraged to send in citations for other lapses for future inclusion, particularly if they have knowledge of a specialized or foreign language field of drama. Harvard University's online library catalogue is the main source used for monographic entries other than Canadian. Thanks to the staffs of the University ofToronto bookstore and Theatre Books for their help. A heartfelt thank you to Charles Costello and Maurizio Dodaro for their research, and to Sharon Brown and her colleagues at the University of Toronto library for their foreign language referencing work: Teresa Hsieh, Maks Okrasa, Michael Rosenstock, Harriet Sonne, Miguel Torrens, and Barry Walfish. For additional editing, much thanks to Christopher Innes, Charles Leland, Ralph Lindheim, Erminio Neglia, Mariel O'Neill-Karch, Domenico Pietropaolo, Ann Wilson, Hersh Zeifman, and Cyndi Zimmerman.
