Modem Drama Studies: An Annual Bibliography CHARLES A. CARPENTER THE PRESENT ANNUAL BIBLIOGRAPHY follows the basic principles and limitations described in the first installment of March 1974. The main objective is to record current scholarship, criticism, and commentary that may prove valuable to students of modem dramatic literature. The bibliography embraces all the expected areas and topics of modern world drama, including playwrights who lived past 1900 (plus BUchner and Becque) and influential men and women of the theatre other than performers. This year's list covers 1978 and further 1977 items, plus a number of missed 1976 items. It also includes a few 1975 articles published in the new journal Canadian Drama/ L 'Art Dramatique, which is indexed from its inception. Four other especially relevant journals are selectively indexed for the first time: Dialog (Warsaw), Siovenske Divadlo, Rivis/a Italiana di Drammaturgia (1976-) and the Journal oj Beckell Studies (1976-). In general. the bibliography is a good deal more comprehensive than it has been in the past. One reason is that the MLA International Bibliography speeded up publication, so that the volume for 1977 came out in time for me to use it. The main reason, though, is that a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities enabled me to spend the summer of 1978 working on my International Bibliography of Modern Drama Scholarship and Criticism, 1966·1980. I drew upon the vast library resources of London, Paris, Rome, Berlin and Oslo, as well as Harvard and CorneU. I wish to express my appreciation to the helpful and tolerant personnel in those great libraries. The bibliography is divided into ten parts (note the merger of Asian with Commonwealth in section D): A. General (including reference works) B. American 137 138 CHARLES A. CARPENTER C. British (including Irish) D. Commonwealth and Asian E. Spanish (including Portuguese and Latin American) F. French G. Italian H. Germanic (including Austrian, Swiss, and Dutch) J. Scandinavian K. Eastern European (Russian, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, and Balkan) Section A is restricted to material that would not fit in the better-defined categories. Once again I am indebted to Professor 1. Norman Wilkinson of Maine for submitting several Chinese drama/ theatre titles. Abbreviations used in the checklist, besides those for the journals listed below, include the flISt three letters of months and seasons (Jan , Sum, etc.), Lon, NY. Bos, and Dub for the cities, Amer, Eng, Lit, Lang, Bib/, Assn, and Lib for the obvious, and UP to indicate a university press. Funher abbreviations -most of them self-evident-are Bul for Bulletin, J for Journal, Mag for Magazine, Pr for Press, Q for Quarterly, Rev for Review, and St for Studies.
