Abstract
William Osler served as Walt Whitman's physician during the 1880s. Mutual medical-literary interests might have influenced both, but they found little in common. This article analyzes Osler and Whitman's relationship and Osler's growing appreciation of Wh itman during World War I. War experience shaped both Osler's and Whitman's interactions with patients.
