This paper explores the highly gendered nature of expertise and bravery from the perspective of "hospital stories," using the narrative generated by a nurse working in a burn unit on September 11, 2001. Through the use of narrative, the instability of gender as a way to categorize thought and action is thrown open to a more nuanced and broader analysis of the less visible, but just as compelling aspects of disasters and crises.
