Guidelines for Contributors

Manuscript submissions and correspondence concerning editorial matters should be addressed to the Editorial Office, Israel Studies, Ben-Gurion Research Center, Sede-Boker Campus, Israel 84990 (tel.: +972-8-6596-949 or 6596-936; fax: +972-8-6596-939 or 8-646-7516; e-mail: istudies@bgumail.bgu.ac.il).

Manuscripts that have been published or that are currently under consideration for publication elsewhere in either article or book form will not be accepted. In the interest of authors, the copyright for all articles published in Israel Studies is assigned to the University of Indiana Press. Should any version of the manuscript be a translation of work that has appeared in Hebrew or another language, that fact should be clearly noted in detail in the accompanying submission letter. In exceptional cases, Israel Studies will consider translating work submitted in Hebrew. Manuscripts are peer reviewed anonymously and may be edited for style. A Style Sheet and sample pages will be sent upon request.

The fullest contact information should be included with the manuscript for the author and any co-authors. This includes: telephone numbers (home, work, cellular), fax numbers, e-mail addresses (home, work, if not the same).

Manuscript Submissions:

  1. Contributions to Israel Studies may be up to 25 pages in length. Book review lengths will be determined by the Editor, but typically range from 3 to 10 pages. Illustrations are encouraged.
  2. Manuscripts must be typed double-spaced (including notes, indented material, and tables) in a standard 12-point font and have adequate margins. Israel Studies uses an Endnote style that is a variant of the University of Chicago Manual of Style (1982 or 1993 edition).
  3. Authors are asked to avoid excessive academic or technical jargon, since the readership of Israel Studies is multidisciplinary and multilingual. Acronyms and abbreviations should be spelled out in full when used for the first time, and fully explained in the Endnotes if the genre definition of the word/concept differs from that of standard British or American dictionaries. [End Page 153]
  4. Initial submissions should be submitted only in hard copy and should conform to the style and format guidelines.

If your article is accepted, it is preferred that you send the final draft as an RTF attachment by e-mail. If you are unfamiliar with sending and receiving RTF, or unable to do so, please contact the Editor or Copy Editor for help. The RTF attachment should be followed by a hard copy of the final draft to check the validity of the electronic transfer process.

  5. Do not submit original artwork (figures, graphs, photographs) for review. Camera-ready original artwork or TIF files of the artwork will be required upon acceptance of the article for publication.
  6. It is the responsibility of the author(s) to ensure that names, affiliations, and other identifying material, such as acknowledgments or personal references, are placed on the title page only, or on a separate page preceding the text. The title page should include author's name(s), affiliations, mailing and e-mail addresses, fax, and home and work telephone and cell-phone numbers.
  7. Disks should have 3 files: 1) Text in a separate file. 2) Notes in a separate file. 3) Abstract and brief professional biography containing present affiliation and recent or major publications. The author's name should be on the disk label and the files should be designated as "Lastname".T, "Lastname".N, and "Lastname". A. There is no bibliography.
