44 Krista Franklin Seven Mixed Medium Collages As a child growing up in Ohio, I was captivated by the sky and its expansiveness, especially at night when the stars pulsated in the pitch black like heartbeats. I thought God lived in the sky; it had so much depth and mystery to it. This preoccupation is evident in my collages , because it continues to be a recurring motif. It has come to take on a multitude of meanings over the course of the past several years. It is the natural and the supernatural; both theatrical backdrop and main character, a visual reminder to consistently gaze upward, and to strive for progress in an upward direction. My collages are my other poetry, my hieroglyphics, my cartas rotas, my maps, and secret messages. Every piece of torn paper or tenderly cut image carries with it its own weight and meaning. It’s the viewer’s role to decipher it, to make meaning of the fragments of our own natural selves that we discover/recover from the art.
