Biomimicry Institute

www.biomimicryinstitute.org Think of nature as a giant product testing lab. Life then represents a database, four billion years in the making, of what works on this planet. This is the elegant idea behind biomimicry. Why bother? Sustainability. Looking to nature for inspiration, patterns, templates, strategies, and methods builds sustainability into the whole problem-solving process because the crucible of long-term survival has already weeded out nonsustainable solutions. This is a big idea site with big ambitions. Fascinating case studies connect and extend the ideas to the practical and human level. Prairies, with their many deep-rooted perennial species, are highlighted as a model for rethinking agriculture.

Wildlands CPR’s Road and Off-road Vehicle Research Clearinghouse

www.wildlandscpr.org Wildlands CPR has a wealth of information about road and off-road-vehicle (ORV) impacts. In addition to the daily blog and related news feed, the searchable resources collection (found on the Resources Page) provides information on road and ORV policy, legal issues, and scientific data. The recently updated searchable bibliographic database has grown to over 20,000 citations documenting the physical and ecological effects of roads and off-road vehicles. This database provides access to relevant scientific literature on erosion, fragmentation, sedimentation, pollution, effects on wildlife, aquatic and hydrologic effects, and various other impacts. The database contains complete citations, most with accompanying abstracts, to both peer-reviewed and “grey” literature including journal articles, conference proceedings, books, lawsuits, and agency reports.

Aquatic Plant Information Retrieval System (APIRS)

plants.ifas.ufl.edu The Invasive Plant Management Section of Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission sponsors this online database of nearly 75,000 journal articles, reports, books, and other scientific literature on aquatic, wetland, and invasive plants. Searches by author, date, plant species, category, keyword, and citation are possible, as well as searching all fields and setting date ranges. Users can tag and save search results once they register for free. People are also encouraged to send their published works to APIRS to help ensure that the collection is comprehensive.

North Carolina Botanical Garden

ncbg.unc.edu This site is an excellent example of outreach and education from a public institution. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill hosts a “conservation garden.” The home page shares the mission statement, calendar, information about tours and clinics and facilities, and much more. The menu tabs allow users to find information quickly and easily about visiting, educational opportunities, gardens and natural areas, plants and gardening, conservation, the herbarium, and participation. The site provides useful information about recommended gardening practices and plants (environmental responsibility, for drought conditions, native plants, rare plants, plant and seed sources). In addition, six conservation principles elaborated into 27 specific actions are provided for people interested in “minimal impact development.”
